Technology impacts law practice: Chief Justice

CHENNAI: Madras High Court Chief Justice A.P.Shah on Friday said advances in science and technology and globalisation were bringing about tremendous changes in the practice of law. More cases pertaining to cyber laws and those related to Intellectual Property Rights are coming up before the courts, he added.

Addressing students at the inauguration of the first ‘Pro Bono Enviro,’ national moot court competition organised by the School of Excellence in Law of the Tamil Nadu Dr.Ambedkar Law University, he said the legal profession was changing fast and lawyers had to change with it.

Law students, Mr. Shah said, must also develop an interest in faculties other than their subject while in college. He said that lawyers could function well only if they were efficient and honest. They must remember that the legal profession was one of providing service to the community.

Madras High Court judge S. J. Mukhopadhaya, in his special address, welcomed the moot court competition on environment laws.

He said there were several laws concerning the environment in the country, but unfortunately awareness of these was less among the public.

Tamil Nadu Dr.Ambedkar Law University Vice-Chancellor S.Sachidanandam said the topic for the moot court competition was emissions trading, which is an upcoming concept in the international environmental arena. Eleven teams from all over the country would participate in the three-day event.

The finals of the competition would be held on Sunday.
