Editors Guild’s plea to BCCI

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Editors Guild of India on Friday condemned the restrictions placed on the media for covering the first edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

In a representation to BCCI president Sharad Pawar and IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi, the Guild urged them to remove all “unnecessary and impossible conditions” so that the IPL’s inaugural edition “gets the extensive and free coverage that it deserves.”

Protesting the media accreditation rules, the Guild sought to point out that the conditions set by the IPL on coverage “have appallingly sought to give an ‘extremely limited’ definition of the term ‘media’.”

The Guild is upset with the clause, which stipulated that the media cannot use any image or photograph in any other publication or website even if it belonged to the same organisation.

“Indirectly, it is making a claim on the images taken by the media organisations as a property of the IPL,” the Guild said.

Another cause of concern is the requirement that media organisations upload at their own expense images obtained by them on the official IPL website on the understanding that the League could use them without any payment to the newspapers or news agencies.

According to the Guild, these conditions destroyed the exclusivity and individuality of the work done by a photographer of a newspaper or a news agency and cut a source of images for small newspapers.
