Airlines increase their fares
Ananth Krishnan
CHENNAI: Indian air carriers are set to increase fares by Rs.350 as a result of an increase in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices.
Oil companies announced a 13 per cent increase in ATF charges on Tuesday as a result of the increasing global price of crude oil. ATF price in Chennai increased by Rs.6731.54 a kilolitre, from Rs.51090.08 in March to Rs.57821.62 on April 1.
Airlines are increasing their fuel surcharges to offset the price increase. Passengers currently pay Rs.1,650 on each ticket as fuel surcharge. They will now have to shell out close to Rs.2,000.
Kingfisher Airlines has announced an across-the-board increase in the fuel surcharge by Rs.350 on long haul flights and Rs.150 on short haul ones. Jet Airways is planning a similar increase, sources said.
Paramount Airways will increase its fuel surcharge by Rs.250 effective April 7, Managing Director M. Thiagarajan told The Hindu. “This will go to exactly offset the price increase,” he said.
With increasing oil prices, airlines say they are forced to pass the burden of increasing costs on to passengers. ATF accounts for 40 per cent of the operational costs of airlines, and airline chiefs attribute the high fuel costs as a major reason for their losses – Indian air carriers operated with combined losses of around Rs.2,400 crore last year.
ATF in some Indian states costs double the global rates, and airline chiefs have been pressing for the government to reduce taxes on the fuel.
“It is high time that the Government of India does something on excise duty and notional import duty levied on fuel,” Mr. Thiagarajan said.
“This will definitely help the airline industry.”
