Vanzara alleges rights violation

Special Correspondent

AHMEDABAD: The former Gujarat Additional Director General of Police, D.G. Vanzara, the prime accused in the Sohrabuddin fake encounter case, and his alleged accomplices, have complained of human rights violation by the police in treating them in the custody.

Mr. Vanzara and other accused have moved the Ahmedabad sessions court, complaining that the police tried to handcuff them while they were being taken to the civil hospital for medical check-up.

They stated that since they were all under trials in the encounter case pending any conviction, handcuffing them would be violative of the apex court’s guidelines. The guidelines also specified that even when a convict was taken to hospital for treatment, handcuffing him was violative of human rights.

The accused named the Ahmedabad Joint Police Commissioner, H. P. Singh, as having issued ‘oral instructions’ to handcuff them. The court has summoned the Joint Commissioner and other police officials on April 11 to explain their conduct.
