Database of artistes compiled

Staff Reporter

TIRUCHI: Working with the aim of promoting, preserving and protecting culture, the Thanjavur-headquartered South Zone Cultural Centre (SZCC) has compiled a computerised database of artistes of various art forms of the south.

The database contains complete details of 3,600 artistes of various art form categories such as folk and classical dances, instrumental, classical and folk vocal, painting and sculpture and theatre of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Puducherry , Lakshwadweep and Andamans.

Besides compilation of the database, the SZCC has also “graded” the artistes to send the qualitatively better artistes for various cultural festivals to showcase the art forms.

The objective of compiling the database is also to enhance the communication between the artistes and the centre, K.V. Giridhar, Director, SZCC, told The Hindu here.

Rebuild art forms

By involving the artistes, the centre has to plans to rebuild the dead and the dying art forms of the southern states such as the Goundali dance of Karnataka, leather puppet show of Tamil Nadu and the Burrakatha of Andhra Pradesh.

The centre was not only keen in rebuilding the dying art forms of the south but also improving the quality aspect, says Mr. Giridhar.

The launch of the Theatre Rejuvenation Scheme by the SZCC was an effort to rejuvenate the theatre and improve the quality of the plays by adding technical inputs wherever required without losing its original identity.

Workshop

In the backdrop of the reduction of theatre performances and theatre artistes, the centre has planned to interact with the theatre artistes and eminent personalities in this field during the three-day workshop to be held at Tiruchi in May.

The mechanisms to attract the mass to the theatre plays, technical inputs that could be added to the theatre and theatre ethics would be all discussed at the workshop besides ascertaining feedbacks, views and suggestions from the artistes.

Exchange programmes

The SZCC has planned a series of intensive cultural exchange programmes by bringing artistes of various art forms from the northern states to the south.

The programmes would be held in September – October at Chennai, Thanjavur, Madurai and Kanyakumari to encourage better cultural exchanges between the north and the south.

Subsequently, artistes from south would be taken to Agra, Varanasi, Allahabad and Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh to showcase their art forms.

This would be organised in collaboration with the North Central Zone Cultural Centre, headquartered at Allahabad.
