Nam gets past Vijay Kannan

Special Correspondent

CHANDIGARH: Hyun-Woo Nam of Korea comfortably got past Vijay Kannan with a 6-3, 6-4 win in the first round of the ITF Futures tennis tournament at the CLTA Complex here on Monday.

The third-seeded Korean was more mobile on court and quite fluent with his strokes, even as Vijay tried in vain to put his crafty game of touch and timing to good use. After being down 1-5 in the second set, Vijay managed to win three games in a row but that could only help him provide respectability to the scoreline as the Korean served it out without any fuss.

In the only other singles match in the main draw, Russian Danila Arsenov got past compatriot Sergei Krotiouk in straight sets. Arsenov, who had punched Kamala Kannan in an off-court incident during the last tournament at Gurgaon, has been permitted by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) to play the event, while it contemplates a suitable penalty.

The Indian lads showed a lot of fighting spirit in the final round of the qualifying event, and four of them — Vishnu Vardhan, V.M. Ranjeet, Rupesh Roy and Mithun Murali — booked their berth in the main draw with impressive performances.

Vishnu drew the second-seeded Sun Peng of China in the main draw while Roy will face the seventh-seeded Kento Takeuchi of Japan.

In doubles action, Yuki Bhambri partnered Kamala Kannan to record a memorable win in the super tie-break against the Japanese Katsushi Fukuda and Kento Takeuchi.
