Vijaya Bank posts win

BANGALORE: Vijaya Bank and MEG continued its winning spree in the Prof. N.C. Parappa Memorial Trophy ‘A’ Division State basketball league championship.

In late night matches at the Sree Kanteerava stadium on Sunday, Vijay Bank overwhelmed Karnataka State Police (KSP) 72-57 while MEG quelled ASC, in a clash of Army units, at 63-53.

The bankmen brought in all their experience to put it across KSP quite convincingly after leading 39-28 at the halfway stage.

In the other clash, the defending champion (MEG) for once was tested but the brilliance of Sridhar and the solidity provided by Tinu Joseph in defence tilted the scales in its favour.

The results:

Vijaya Bank 72 (Srinivasa Gowda 19, Sanjay Raj 10) bt KSP 57 (Lokesh 17, Mahesh 11, Shyamsundar 10); MEG 63 (Sridhar 22, Tinu Joseph 13) bt ASC 53 (Arif 17, Nixon 17).

Adith wins title

Adith Jagadish (6.5) of Lourdes Central School won the DCS invitational rapid chess tournament organised by Derik’s Chess School (Mangalore) on Monday. He remained unbeaten in seven rounds to take home the trophy.

Prakash V. Rao (6) of Canara College finished second and his teammate R. Kaushik (5.5) finished third. Shabdik Varma of SDM Ujire stole the limelight by securing sixth place in the main prize list besides winning the under-11 section.
