Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi’s convoy passing through the North Usman Road flyover on Sunday.
CHENNAI: With the opening of the North Usman Road flyover on Sunday evening the traffic police have announced new traffic arrangements effective from Monday morning. According to the announcement, vehicles bound for Valluvar Kottam from North Usman Road have to use the flyover to reach Mahalingapuram Main Road, take a right turn at the Iyappan Temple junction, and proceed to their destination through Kamdar Nagar. Vehicles bound for Mahalingapuram should take the new flyover. Vehicles from North Usman Road to Kodambakkam Bridge should use the service road to take a left turn. Valluvar Kottam to KodambakkamVehicles from Valluvar Kottam towards Kodambakkam should go straight under the flyover, while those bound for Mahalingapuram are prohibited from taking a right turn at the North Usman Road-Mahalingapuram junction. Instead, they should take Periyar Road, Habibullah Road and the new flyover. Vehicles coming from Vadapalani on Kodambakkam Bridge and proceeding towards Valluvar Kottam can go straight under the flyover. Those bound for Panagal Park can take a right turn at the junction below the flyover. The existing free left turn for vehicles from Kodambakkam Bridge to Mahalingapuram will continue. Vehicles from Mahalingapuram to Panagal Park should use the new flyover, while vehicles bound for Kodambakkam Bridge can take a right turn under the flyover. Vehicles proceeding towards Valluvar Kottam from Mahalingapuram should take the existing route of left turn at Iyappan Temple junction and then proceed through Kamdar Nagar to reach Valluvar Kottam. The commissioning of the flyover combined with the new traffic arrangements are bound to ease traffic congestion at the Kodambakkam Bridge and between Mahalingapuram and T. Nagar. The first benefit is that hereafter Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) buses, including bus nos. 17D, M17, 37D, 37G and 25G bound for Vadapalani, K.K. Nagar and Iyyappanthangal will not have to take a circuitous route via Periyar Road, Habibullah Road and North Usman Road to the Kodambakkam Bridge. Buses from Kodambakkam Bridge and bound for T. Nagar also can take a right turn at the junction of North Usman Road-Mahalingapuram junction instead of taking the Periyar Road and Habibullah Road.
