LONG WAIT: Candidates queue up to get token numbers at a job fair organised by IFA Management Consultants and Thaimadi Thamizh Sangam in Chennai on Sunday.

Chennai: Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin on Sunday said that 2.35 lakh persons have been recruited by the State government since the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) assumed office in May 2006.

Inaugurating a job fair organised by IFA Management Consultants and Thaimadi Thamizh Sangam, Mr. Stalin said the State government was filling vacancies, providing jobs on compassionate grounds and giving promotions wherever due. It had also entered into agreements with 12 multinational firms and this would create lakhs of jobs.

Social Welfare Minister Poongothai Aladi Aruna and Mayor M. Subramanian also participated in the inauguration. About 25 companies, including Hyundai and Larsen and Toubro, had set up stalls at the Santhome Higher Secondary School to evaluate candidates.

Thousands of graduates and final year college students participated in the fair.

Several candidates said they had to wait for three hours under the hot sun to get a token number before they could submit their resume.

There were no organisers to direct the candidates nor were there signboards to help them. Only two organisers sat in a corner of the venue to distribute the tokens to hundreds of the candidates waiting in queue.

At one point, the crowd surged forward to get the tokens and the policemen on duty had to push back the candidates.
