Staff Reporter
CHENNAI: Three service organisations in the country, including one from Tamil Nadu, have been selected as recipients of the twelfth Mahaveer Awards for the year 2006.
Instituted by Bhagwan Mahaveer Foundation, a city-based voluntary organisation, the annual awards aim to identify individuals and organisations dedicated towards social welfare.
In a press release, Foundation managing trustee N. Sugalchand Jain said Amar Seva Sangam at Ayikudy, Tirunelveli district, had been chosen for the award for excellence in social service. Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences in Maharashtra had made it for service in the fields of education and medicine. The award for propagation of non-violence and vegetarianism would be presented to Action for Protection of Wild Animals, Orissa.
The awards carry a cash prize of Rs.5 lakh each, apart from a memento and a citation. The recipients were chosen from among 300 nominations received from across the country by a jury headed by former Chief Justice of India M.N. Venkatachaliah, he said.
