Precaution: Repair work in progress along the garden road in Udhagamandalam on Saturday. –

Udhagamandalam: Work on improving the footpath along the Government Botanical Garden road here is progress.

Many opine that a facelift to the stretch was long overdue. They say that the footpaths in many other parts of the town too are in a state of neglect for years together.

“In holiday destinations appearance of the roads and footpaths either make or mar their reputation,” they say.

Expressing the hope that priority would be accorded to improving all the footpaths, residents say that the damaged footpaths and broken railings have for long constituted a sad commentary on the civic administration.

If the footpaths continue to be neglected increasing congestion on the narrow roads would subject motorists to considerable inconvenience and expose pedestrians to a great deal of risk.

For some time now tourists have been vying with the local residents in complaining about the appalling condition of the footpaths. “Either they are damaged or encroached upon by road side shops and pavement hawkers,” they say.

Stating that the joy of walking can be experienced most only in hill stations, they wondered how can we enjoy ourselves when the threat of being jostled or hit by speeding vehicles is constant.

Udhagamandalam Municipal Council chairman R. Rajendran said that the municipality was unable to repair all the footpaths because of shortage of funds. Even along the Government Botanical Garden road only a part can be improved with the available funds.
