To give hassle-free health care for outpatients For undergoing minor surgical procedures MADURAI: In an attempt at providing hassle-free medical care for outpatients visiting Government Rajaji Hospital to undergo minor surgical procedures, a day-care operation theatre will soon be set up, according to S.M. Sivakumar, Dean (in-charge). On an average, 100 to 120 surgeries are performed at the 16 operation theatres of which 80 per cent is categorised as major. Most of the minor surgical procedures of the Department of General Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Otolaryngology and Paediatrics are also performed at these theatres. Generally, major surgical cases are attended to during morning hours while minor procedures performed in the afternoon. Raja Manoharan, Professor and Head, Department of Anaesthesiology, said: “Patients for minor surgeries are admitted as outpatients. They come to the hospital on a fixed date and wait in front of the theatres for their turn congesting the already crowded area. Moreover, there are also chances of spread of infection. Once the day-care theatre is established, all these problems will be solved easing the tension both for patients and medical team. Given the medical advancements in the field of anaesthesiology, the concept of day surgical care is fast developing.” Under the new arrangement, those requiring minor surgeries will be asked to come to the hospital in the morning instead of afternoon. They will leave after the surgical procedure gets over. Dr. Sivakumar said that the hospital administration was working out staff allocation and other formalities to get the decks cleared to start the day-care operation theatre.
