Bids for construction of modern library in Chennai will be floated by May

CHENNAI: Bids for the construction of a modern library in the city will be floated by May.

Work on the project will be completed within 18 months, according to an official release issued after the Public Works Department and architectural firm C.R. Narayana Rao Architects and Engineers signed a memorandum of understanding on Thursday for drawing up detailed designs of the proposed building.

T. Anbazhagan, Superintending Engineer of the PWD, and C.N. Raghavendran, who represented the firm, signed the MOU at the Secretariat, in the presence of School Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu.

The library project was announced in the budget for 2007-2008.

The cost of the project was estimated at Rs.100 crore, which would be met the Local Library Authority and the State Government in the ratio 80:20. In August 2007, eight acres at Kotturpuram were transferred to the School Education Department.

The expression of interest was sought from architectural firms in August last and the process of selection of the firm concluded in February.
