KOLKATA: Bangladesh’s Grandmaster Ziaur Rahman produced a superb win over super GM Smbat Lputian of Armenia to join overnight leaders, GMs Nguyen Anh Dung of Vietnam and Viktor Laznicka of Czech Republic, at the end of the fifth round of the third Kolkata Open chess tournament at the Gorky Sadan here on Friday. Dung and Laznicka decided to shun risks and quickly signed the peace treaty in 21 moves to stay up the leader board. Rahman’s famous victory was due to his ability to exploit the exposed king of his opponent in the endgame. He won in 39 moves of a Reti opening. International Master Saptarshi Roy was the toast of the fifth round. He won an exciting game against Grandmaster Vladimir Dobrov of Russia. Having opted for the Queen’s Gambit declined variation, Roy won a few pawns at the risk of his king being slightly exposed. He, then, not only got out of the situation but also eventually won the game. Important results (Indians, unless stated otherwise): Viktor Laznicka (Cze, 4.5) drew with Nguyen Anh Dung (Vie, 4.5), Ziaur Rahman (Ban, 4.5) bt Smbat Lputian (Arm, 3.5), Koneru Humpy (3.5) drew with Sandipan Chanda (4), Sundararajan Kidambi (3) lost to Krishnan Sasikiran (4), Ghaem Maghami (Ira, 4) bt M.R. Venkatesh (3), Arghyadip Das (3) lost to Alberto David (Lux, 4), Adly Ahmed (Egy, 4) bt Arun Prasad (3), Vladimir Dobrov (Rus, 3) lost to Saptarshi Roy (4), P. Konguvel (3.5) drew with Safin Shukhrat (Uzb, 3.5), Vikramaditya Kamble (3) lost to Dibyendu Barua (4).
