New Delhi: The Supreme Court, in association with the Editors Guild of India, the Press Council, the Indian Law Institute and the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee, is organising a two-day workshop for accredited journalists on “Reporting of Court Proceedings by Media and Administration of Justice.” This is the first time that the judiciary and the media will be interacting on issues concerning reportage of court proceedings. Chief Justice of India K.G. Balakrishnan and several senior judges of the Supreme Court, top editors including Editor-in-Chief of The Hindu N. Ram, and senior lawyers will address the workshop on March 29 and 30 at the Vigyan Bhawan. It will be attended by over 100 journalists. Secretary General of the Editors Guild K.S. Sachidananda Murthy said the workshop would deliberate on the trends and opportunities in and constraints of reporting legal proceedings. The importance of court reporting has increased in the last decade, with newspapers and television channels providing coverage of important cases. The workshop will have sessions devoted to issues such as contempt of court, reporting of matters that are sub judice, use and abuse of freedom of the press, trial by the media, development of a self executing code and professional ethics in reporting. This interface is aimed at ensuring that the people — the ultimate consumer — gets fair and transparent news about court proceedings and administration of justice. The Editors Guild intends to hold similar workshops in all the regions of the country.
