Chandrashekar, Chairman, Karnataka Legislative Council; and P.Y. Rajendra Kumar, Director, Department of Public Libraries, Bangalore, at the workshop in Bangalore on Thursday.

Bangalore: “Libraries should not just be reading rooms. They should take up other activities and offer more services so as to attract students and public,” said B.K. Chandrashekar, Chairman of the Legislative Council.

He was speaking after inaugurating the workshop on “Network of Karnataka Library Services” organised by the Bangalore University Library, in association with Department of Public Libraries here on Thursday.

Prof. Chandrashekar said that public libraries should offer online training workshops to attract youth. “The various libraries should be networked. This should also include rural libraries for the benefit of students in rural areas,” he added.

H.A. Ranganath, Vice-Chancellor of Bangalore University, said that libraries should not be confined within four walls. “Libraries are not just for students, even adults should make use of them,” he said.

He added that students of government colleges need to learn about the use of online libraries and how it was a huge knowledge bank. “The libraries of all the universities in the State should be networked. That should be the outcome of today’s workshop,” he added. On the occasion, Prof. Chandrashekar inaugurated a portal which is a directory of over 300 writers and poets from the State.
