‘CPI not opposed to Telangana’

HYDERABAD: The CPI has categorically announced that it will not stand in the way of the United Progressive Alliance Government in its efforts to evolve consensus and create a separate Telangana State.

The party elucidated its stand on separate Telangana in a political resolution adopted after heated debate at its 20th national congress that concluded here on Thursday. It was seen as a victory of sorts for the pro-Telangana leaders since the efforts of CPI rank and file from Andhra and Rayalaseema to oppose the draft resolution adopted at the Chennai national council failed.

CPI general secretary A. B. Bardhan was, however, not satisfied with the way the Telangana issue had been incorporated in the resolution and asked it to be re-drafted. He said he would release the final resolution at a press conference on Friday.

Meanwhile, Nalgonda MP and the senior party leader Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy was elected deputy general secretary of CPI. He earlier served as general secretary of AISF and AIYF and State CPI secretary.
