Health insurance for all PG students of BU

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: Several student-friendly initiatives were approved by the Bangalore University Syndicate on Monday.

The Syndicate approved the proposal to provide health insurance to all postgraduate students, students of the University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering and University Law College.

A Syndicate member told The Hindu that the university would be spending around Rs. 15 lakh a year towards the health insurance for students. “The Syndicate deliberated on the issue. The university is keen to encourage students, especially those coming from rural areas, to pursue their education. This is just one of the means to do that,” he said.

The university hostels were crowded and over four students are forced to share a room. The Syndicate approved construction of two more hostels for students belonging to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in the Jnana Bharathi and Central College campuses.

“The four hostels that we have are overcrowded. Students from rural areas are the ones who usually stay at the university hostels. We did not want them to pursue their education by living in cramped quarters. The two new hostels will help a great deal,” the Syndicate member said.

Another decision that was approved was to award the subject-wise toppers of postgraduate streams Rs. 1,000 as scholarship. The university would award Rs. 2,500 as stipend per month to Ph.D. entrance examination toppers.

Indoor stadium

The proposal to build a sports indoor stadium was approved. The Syndicate member said the indoor stadium would be built near the Prasanna Kumar Block on the Central College campus.
