U-19 team to play with top clubs

New Delhi: The India under-19 football team will rub shoulders with the junior sides of some of the most famous European and Brazilian clubs in the Champions Youth Cup to be held in Malaysia in August.

The Indian team’s participation came after strong support from AFC President Mohammed Bin Hammam, who arranged a meeting between tournament sponsors ‘Gifted Group’ and AIFF President Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi on the sidelines of the AFC Executive Committee meeting in Kuala Lumpur.

The competition, to be held between August 2 and 17, will have 16 teams including under-19 sides of Manchester United, Chelsea, AC Milan, Juventus, Barcelona, Ajax, Bayern Munich, PSV Eindhoven, Porto, Olympique Lyonnais, Brazilian clubs Flamengo and River Plate, besides u-19 teams from Japan, Qatar and host Malaysia. A training camp for the India U-19 team will start in the first week of June, an AIFF release said. — PTI
