Lawyers object to DSP’s remarks

Staff Reporter

KANCHEEPURAM: Members of the Lawyers Association, Kancheepuram, have objected to remarks made by the Deputy Superintendent of Police in a letter to his superior about the functioning of two judicial officers of the Kancheepuram court.

Releasing a copy of the letter to reporters here on Wednesday, association vice-president Thambidurai, secretary Murugan, and treasurer Ramesh Kumar said DSP Muniyappan had said the judicial officers used to take leave or get permission to receive the judges of the Madras High Court during working days, thus hampering disposal of cases.

He had also tried to create an impression that there was no progress in the trial of cases because of the ‘adamant’ attitude of the magistrates, despite repeated requests made by the Inspectors and Sub-inspectors of the Kancheepuram Police sub-division.

Mr. Muniyappan sought to create an impression that the magistrates were deviating from the ‘usual practice’ of the police collecting the fine amount and remitting it in the court after summonses were issued.

Regretting that the police officer had unnecessarily caused a friction between the judiciary and the law enforcement machinery by drafting such a letter under the guise of an explanation, the association announced that it would boycott court proceeding until March 28.
