‘India must voice concerns’

NEW DELHI: India must voice the concerns of the Tibetan people correctly, unequivocally and unambiguously, the Bharatiya Janata Party said here on Wednesday in a statement on what it called the “indiscriminate violence” used by the Chinese forces.

In a joint statement issued by L.K. Advani, Rajnath Singh and Jaswant Singh, the BJP criticised the Centre for “blatant appeasement towards China with scant regard to the country’s national honour and foreign policy independence.”

Accusing the United Progressive Alliance government of adopting a “nationally humiliating” policy, the BJP said the Dalai Lama’s “pain imbued words” were a call to the conscience of all humanity.

The party referred to the ancient cultural ties and the “unique spiritual linkage” between India and Tibet, which was one of the important and last surviving repositories of the thought and teachings of Buddha. India must not “disconnect” from this linkage. Speaking up would not amount to “interference,” the BJP said, for India would be standing up for what is India’s contribution to all humanity — Tibet’s Buddhist culture and civilisation.

Finally, the three leaders said that the ‘chakra’ in the centre of the Indian national flag was the Buddhist symbol of the ‘dharma chakra.’ “How can we adopt the symbol but ignore the reality?”
