Proposal to extend municipality limit

Total limit would go up to 10.6 km after expansion

TIRUPATTUR: The Tirupattur Municipality is actively working on a proposal to extend its boundary limits with a view to boost its revenue. The areas proposed to be attached will soon get a facelift, according to municipality chairperson T. Chockammal Tulasinathan.

Ms. Tulasinathan told The Hindu that Tirupattur had become a municipality way back in 1886. Though it had been more than 125 years, no steps had been taken to extend the municipality area. As a result, priority was given to attach some areas near the Tirupattur town, classified as panchayat areas. The main objective was to bring about overall development in the nearby panchayat areas. The areas to be attached were under the Tirupattur panchayat union, except for Paschal panchayat, which came under the Jolarpet Block. These areas lacked adequate civic amenities in view of insufficient financial resources. The Paschal panchayat comprised of areas such as Asiriyar Nagar, Paschal, Durai Nagar and Haiyath Nagar. Residents suffered due to bad roads and drinking water problem. Hence the municipality, after passing a resolution, wrote to Vellore Collector Dharmendra Pratap requesting him to approve the proposal to extend the municipality area. Ms. Tulasinathan said at present, the municipality limit extended to 4.6 km. Once areas such as Paschal, Palangkuppam, Madapalli, Tirupattur village, Vengalapuram, Rachamangalam, Adiyur, Palipattu, Kasinaickenpatti and Kadirmangalam were attached, the total limit would go up to 10.6 km.

The Chairperson said the municipality had obtained the consent from all the panchayats concerned. Moreover, the Municipality would accord priority to re-lay roads and augment supply of drinking water in these areas. However, Ms. Tulasinathan said chances for the Tirupattur municipality being upgraded to a Corporation were bleak. One of the reasons was that the revenue generated by the municipality did not match stipulated numbers. Tirupattur continued to be backward, with no industries within the town limit.
