Opposition to alumina project mounts
Staff Reporter
BHUBANESWAR: The decade-and-half-long people’s protest against Utkal Alumina International Limited’s proposed alumina refinery project in Kashipur shows no sign of settling down. It is close to one month now since villagers launched dharna in front of plant site demanding proper compensation for land and livelihood. “The already displaced people (nearly 147 families of two villages such as Kendukhunti, Tala Karol and Ramibeda) are sitting on a dharna with active cooperation from the rest of the 24 villages to be affected by project,” said Bhagaban Majhi, Convenor of Prakrutik Sampad Surakshya Parishad (PSSP), which was spearheading people’s movement in the area. Mr. Majhi said the company was going ahead with “illegal construction” since it had not renewed environment as well as mining clearance which had reportedly lapsed in 2000. The project was first conceptualised in early 1990s. The protest reached a flashpoint when three tribals were killed in police firing in 2000.
