Pakistan politics

As pointed out in the editorial “Pakistan’s new Prime Minister” (March 25), had Benazir Bhutto lived, it would have been much simpler to choose a leader. Her sudden passing away in a bomb blast — when leaders of her calibre were needed most in Pakistan — has drastically changed the political scenario there. The fact that the Pakistani people have voted for the secular parties, without giving an absolute majority to any party, shows they are for a coalition government. It is for the PPP and the PML(N), the main coalition partners, to bury the past and safeguard democracy.

Iftikhar Chaudhry, the deposed Chief Justice released from detention, will undoubtedly go down in Pakistani, nay, world history as one of the greatest judges who crusaded for democracy, the rule of law and civil rights. We are proud that we had one of his kind in Justice H.R. Khanna, who did not bother about the consequences of his decision. They truly represent the conscience of mankind.

N.G.R. Prasad,

Chennai
