DD, AIR not to air Test series

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The India-South Africa Test cricket series, beginning March 26, will not be aired live on Doordarshan and All India Radio.

This was decided by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry on Monday in response to a Delhi High Court direction that the government spell out its stand, on a petition seeking legal intervention to ensure that the series was aired live by the public broadcaster.

The Ministry’s position is that only India-Pakistan Test cricket fixtures are notified in the list of games that have to be compulsorily aired on Doordarshan and AIR as per the Sports Broadcasting Signals (Mandatory Sharing with Prasar Bharati) Act, 2007.

The Act makes it compulsory for the broadcast rights holders of certain games — including all one-day international cricket matches — to share the signals with Prasar Bharati.
