BJP seeks speedy implementation

NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party has welcomed the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations and demanded their speedy implementation.

Party spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy said the country was facing two major problems — one, the agricultural crisis that was causing a fall in production and suicide by farmers, and two, inflation that adversely affected people.

Implementation of the Commission’s recommendations would, to some extent, neutralise the rising cost of living.

Mr. Rudy said government employees were reeling under the impact of inflation and revision of wages was overdue.

He pointed out that the Wholesale Price Index had breached Reserve Bank of India’s “comfort zone” and risen to 5.92 per cent.

The cost of essential food items had increased very sharply: edible oil by 35 per cent, rice by 25 per cent and sugar by 7 per cent. Prices of lentils and vegetables had sky-rocketed.

Mr. Rudy predicted that in the days to come when the full impact of the budget presented by Finance Minister P Chidambaram was felt, prices would rise even steeper.

“The BJP is yet to meet to discuss the details of the Pay Commission recommendations. We will give a detailed reaction later when we know what proposals the government has accepted and which ones it is not inclined to implement,” Mr. Rudy said.
