Vikas celebrates its Founder’s Day today

VISAKHAPATNAM: Westwood International School of Oakridge Group from Vikas will come up with a capital outlay of Rs.55 crore on a ten-acre campus at Tagarapuvalasa on the outskirts of Visakhapatnam city so as to start the academic session of 2009-10.

Informing this to media persons on the eve of the 16th Founders’ Day celebrations of Vikas, its chairman Tummala Naga Prasad said initially the school would start operating out of temporarily hired premises at Lawson’s Bay Colony from June this year and move to its permanent premises at Tagarapuvalasa with a built-up area of 1.85 lakh sft.

It would ultimately have a total number of 1,560 students, 420 of whom would be full boarders. In the first year, Westwood would admit only day boarders in nine classes from PP1 to Class VII with two sections of PP1 and one section each in all the other classes.

Vikas was proud of its planned growth by leaps and bounds, effectively encompassing the whole range of schooling in Andhra Pradesh – from humble beginning to finally bursting on the international scene as pioneers in the State, he said. Vikas, which began in 1993 when north Andhra was faced with significant exodus of students at the Intermediate- level to other places for want of good institutes, focused on preparing them adequately for competitive entrance examinations like EAMCET, IIT-JEE, AFMC, JIPMER and others. In 2001, it began its foray into international school education with Oakridge International School in Hyderabad, which was a grand success and now to be followed by Westwood International School here in north Andhra, he said.

Vikas was celebrating its Founders’ Day on Tuesday, he said.
