Chittoor Zilla Parishad passes Rs. 165-crore budget

Top priority for drinking water facilities and roads


Surplus of Rs. 16.62 crore for 2008-09 is Rs. 40 crore more than last year

Rs. 10 crore additional grant to district under job guarantee scheme


Chittoor: The members of Zilla Parishad in the general body meeting held here on Sunday passed a budget for Rs. 165,33,79,000 with a surplus of Rs. 16.62 crore for the year 2008-09, which is Rs. 40 crore more than the last year.

Presiding over the meeting, Zilla Parishad Chairperson M. Subramanyam Reddy said that top priority has been given in the budget for providing drinking water facilities, construction of village roads, anganwadi and school buildings.

Deputy Chief Executive Officer Dayakar Reddy said that the income for the Zilla Parishad is from the grants of Central and State governments apart from rent from the buildings of the Zilla Parishad etc.

The expenditure is Rs.165,17,17,000 during the year against the income of Rs. 165,33,79,000 leaving a surplus of Rs. 16.62 crore.

Further, he has explained in detail about the sources of receipts of income and the expenditure on the activities. Intervening in the budget speech, MP Audikesavalu, MLAs Manohar, Amarnadha Reddy and other ZPTC members have explained in detail about the existence of drinking water problem and shortage of medicines and doctors in the hospitals in the district and wanted the authority to take action to solve them immediately in order to help the people without facing hardships.

ZPTC member Ashok Kumar criticised the authorities for allocating less amount in the budget for providing drinking water facilities in the social welfare hostels and construction of school buildings compared to last year. Zilla Parishad chief executive officer Venkataswamy told that the government has allotted Rs.10 crore additionally to the district under rural employment guarantee scheme for taking of construction and maintenance of roads. On the question of a ZPTC member about not sanctioning houses to the eligible poor persons under Indiramma scheme, who are not having white ration cards, the Collector Ravichandar has assured that they will also be sanctioning houses by issuing ration cards.

Verbal duel

There was heated exchange of words between the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Congress members following a TDP member addressing the chairperson using ‘unparliamentary’ words. The ruckus subsided when Mr. Audikesavalu urged the members to maintain the dignity of the House.

The members observed two-minute silence in memory of Bhagat Singh, who was hanged on this day for fighting against the British rule.
