NEW DELHI: The National Cleaner Production Centre (NCPC) of India, established by the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), has carried out more than 350 cleaner production or energy-efficiency assessments in diverse sectors such as leather pulp and paper, dye and dye-intermediates, textiles, cement and automobiles component industries and small and medium enterprises. The implementation of techno-economically viable cleaner production options has resulted in significant reduction in pollution load and improvement of the bottom-line as well as the quality of products. Over 30 cleaner production (CP) institutions have been trained in CP assessment. Four regional centresThe NCPC in turn established four regional cleaner production centres in Karnataka, Gujarat, Punjab and West Bengal. Significantly, the NCPC-India’s services are also utilised by the United Nations agencies in other regions such as South Asia and Africa while support to establish new centres are being extended to Vietnam, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Ethiopia. Cleaner production has, thus, acquired a regional technology sharing dimension as technical assistance is being provided to establish CP centre in other countries of the region, according to a UNIDO statement here. The UNIDO has been providing easily accessible and affordable training techniques and consultancy in eco-friendly practices to small and medium enterprises in India to promote cleaner production. The objective is to increase the efficiency of production while eliminating or minimising wastes and emissions at their source for a sound environment, especially in small industries.
