Milad: lakhs visit Hazratbal shrine

Shujaat Bukhari

SRINAGAR: Lakhs of people visited shrines and mosques across the Kashmir valley on Friday on the occasion of Eid-e-Milad. The Hazratbal shrine here, which houses the Holy relic of Prophet Muhammed, witnessed the biggest gathering — an estimated two lakh. Officials said this was the biggest in recent years. Devotees wept as the relic was displayed after the prayers.

Lakhs of people joined the night-long prayers. Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and the former Chief Minister and MP, Farooq Abdullah, offered Friday prayers at the Hazratbal shrine.

A Milad procession was taken out under the banner of the Islamic Students League (ISL) from Gaw Kadal near here. The processionists were led by ISL chief Shakeel Ahmad Bakshi. This is the second consecutive year that Milad procession has been taken out here after 1990. The Muharram procession has been banned in the civil lines for the past 17 years.
