Stress on communication skills

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: Even if students are strong in their subjects, communication skills and soft skills are vital in today’s job market, emphasised speakers at the College Day celebration of Justice Basheer Ahmed Sayeed College for Women here on Tuesday.

“A plenty of jobs are available. But not all students, who finish their higher education, are employable,” Anna University Vice-Chancellor D.Viswanathan said. He also urged students to pursue higher studies at post graduate and research levels. “Some of you may get a good job immediately after graduation. But that should, by no means, deter your enthusiasm to specialise or pursue research,” he added.

Stressing the importance of patriotism, Prof. Viswanathan said it was okay for students to consider higher studies abroad, but urged them to return to India. Commending the college for its service to underprivileged sections of society, he said the management could apply for university status and it was bound to be granted it. “The college meets all parameters required to function as a university independently. It is certainly one of the top women’s colleges in Tamil Nadu,” he added.

Chairman of the college Moosa Raza said that over 70,000 students had passed out of the college in the last five decades. Of those, more than 15, 000 students were from underprivileged sections of society, he said.

Principal Sanjida Haris presented the annual report of the college, highlighting the achievements of students and faculty members.
