Dalbir looking forward to visiting her brother

NEW DELHI: “If I say I am happy, that will be an understatement. My heart seems like it will burst with joy,” said Dalbir Kaur, sister of Sarabjit Singh, reacting to news about her brother’s death sentence in Pakistan being deferred by a month after fervent appeals by his family and senior Indian leaders.

Ms. Kaur also claimed that the External Affairs Ministry had informed her that in the next couple of days, she would be issued a visa so that she could visit her brother in Pakistan.

“I will be packing Sarabjit’s favourite food items and can’t wait to sit down and have a meal with him. I will be in Delhi for a while to get the paper-work organised and also help Sarabjit’s daughters get visas. I cannot thank senior Indian leaders and the people of Punjab and everyone enough for showing solidarity with our family in our hour of need,” said Ms. Kaur.

She added that after reaching Pakistan, she will appeal to President Pervez Musharraf for release of her brother.

“I am hopeful that if given a chance to present Sarabjit’s case, we will be able to secure his release. Besides appealing to President Musharraf, I will also pray with folded hands to the people of Pakistan to forgive my brother.

“I hope they understand that he is a father, a brother and a husband, killing him means killing an entire family. In my heart, I believe that my brother will come back to India as a free man,” said Ms. Kaur.
