Speculation over restoring judiciary

Nirupama Subramanian

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistani capital was abuzz on Tuesday with the possible reaction from the Supreme Court and President Pervez Musharraf to a resolution that the Pakistan People’s Party and the Pakistan Muslim League (N) have pledged to adopt on restoring the judiciary to its pre-November 3 status.

A meeting of the full court convened by Chief Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar on Tuesday set off speculation that moves were afoot in the Supreme Court to block Parliament from taking this step.

A petition filed in the court on Monday asking the court to stay Parliament from passing a resolution on the reinstatement of the judges added to the media speculation, and there was widespread expectation that the meeting would discuss the situation that may arise for the judges presently in office if such a resolution was adopted.

Finally, a Supreme Court press release after the meeting said the full court discussed administrative matters, and “expressed its entire satisfaction” at the speed at which it had disposed of cases in the last four months of its existence. No date has been yet set for the hearing.
