Chennai: Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin on Monday inaugurated an upgraded garbage transfer station in Pulianthope zone and inspected compactor trucks recently purchased by the Chennai Corporation.
The construction of the transfer station — a transit point before the garbage is taken to Kodungaiyur — and the renovation of the wall surrounding it cost Rs.2.89 crore.
Work orders have been sanctioned to modernise the garbage transfer stations in Basin Bridge, Ayanavaram and Nungambakkam zones. Kilpauk zone’s garbage transfer station functions on land near the Pulianthope zone premises. This facility would also be upgraded.
Mr. Stalin also presented the keys of three new compactor trucks to drivers to improve the collection of solid waste. About 20 compactors would be commissioned this month and 60 more would to be bought. Each compactor costs Rs.19.31 lakh.
Mayor M. Subramanian and Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni participated in the inauguration of the transfer station. Later, the Mayor presided over a programme to mark Women’s Day at the Corporation.
