Ramachandran shines

Karaikudi: Ramachandran powered his way to a brilliant 80 to help Aruna Sports Cricket Club chalk out a two-wicket victory over Alagappa Chettiar College of Engineering and Technology in the Canara Bank-Sivagangai DCA ‘A’ division league here recently.

The scores (‘A’ division): ACCET 212 for nine in 40 overs (Ranjit Kumar 71) lost to Aruna Sports CC 216 for eight in 31.4 overs (Ramachandram 80, Kasi Viswanathan 51, Sivagnanam four for 46); Sekkalai CC 186 for three in 35 overs (Chandra Mohan 66 not out) lost to Oscar CC 187 for eight in 33.1 overs (Ibrahim 40); Devakottai CC 188 in 27.4 overs (Balamurugan 44, Narayanan four for 39) bt Aptech WCC Software Lab CC 127 for nine in 24.1 overs; Knights CC 205 for eight in 32 overs (Thirumurugan 49, Muralidharan 42) bt Karaikudi Town CC 102 for eight in 18 overs (Shankar four for 11).

‘B’ division: Young Blood CC 73 in 19.4 overs lost to Star Birds CC 74 for five in 9.4 overs (Balasubramanian four for 23).

‘C’ division: Optra Computers CC 113 in 23.3 overs lost to Alagappa Govt. Arts College 114 for seven in 23.5 overs; Senshare CC 137 in 19.3 overs (Richard 42 not out) bt Kendriya Vidyalaya, Karaikudi 71 in 20.2 overs; CECRI Club 123 in 19.4 overs (Senthil four for 20) lost to B.Tech CECRI 125 for five in 16.5 overs (Karthik Muthukumar 47); Moonlight CC 150 for four in 25 overs (Chinnadurai 70) bt Little Knights CC 122 in 23.3 overs (Ravikumar four for 27).

SIT triumphs

Sethu Institute of Technology, Kariapatti, won the men’s basketball title, while VV Vanniaperumal College, Virudhunagar, won the women’s volleyball title in the Kalaithanthi Karumuttu Thiagarajar Chettiar memorial inter-collegiate tournaments organised by Thiagarajar Arts College at Madurai recently.

The results: Men: Basketball (Final): SIT, Kariapatti 60 (Marimuthu Kumar 15, Baranivelrajan 11) bt Sourashtra College 39 (Gajendran 13, Anand 15); Semifinals: SIT 91 (Sasikumar 19) bt Thiagarajar Arts 39 (Sivakumar 12); Sourashtra College 63 (Gajendran 16) bt MSS Wakf Board College 50 (Kannan 19).

Women: Volleyball (Final): VVV College, Virudhunagar bt Lady Doak College, Madurai 25-16, 25-19, 25-16. Semifinals: VVV College bt Sri Meenakshi Govt. College for Women 25-10, 25-14; LDC bt Thiagarajar Arts 25-16, 25-21.

Hockey tournament

Sixteen teams, including defending champion, Indian Overseas Bank, Chennai, Indian Bank, SAI Hostel, Chennai Kovilpatti Elevens, Thanjavur Elevens, Thirunagar Hockey Club, Madurai and host Tamil Nadu Electricity Board will be participating in the seventh annual TNEB Trophy State-level hockey tournament, which will get under way at Anna Stadium, Palayamkottai on Wednesday.
