Vijay puts Rovers in driver’s seat

CHENNAI: M. Vijay struck a 169-ball 164 to help Jolly Rovers declare at 376 for five against Eagle on the first day of the 10th round matches of the TNCA first division league here on Monday.

Vijay stroked 19 boundaries and five sixes in his innings.

He was involved in a 168-run opening partnership with R. Ramkumar and 169 for the third wicket with Dinesh Karthik.

In response, Eagle collapsed to 72 for nine in 22 overs. Off-spinner R. Ashwin scalped four wickets for 31 runs.

Vidyut hits century

At ICL-Gurunanak, S. Vidyut’s century took Alwarpet to 315 for six against Grand Slam. Vidyut put on 142 for the third wicket with V. Subramania Siva. V. Maaruthi Raghav (82 batting) then added 113 for the sixth wicket with Ashwin Venkataraman.

S. Anirudha’s 136 took Aruna to 318 for nine in 90 overs against Indian Bank.

The century was his fourth in nine matches, and took his tally for the season to 842.

Anirudha and P. Sakthi (57) had a 101-run partnership for the second wicket. At CPT-IP, India Pistons ended the day at 193 for four against IOB. S.P. Lekshmikumar was batting on 58, while M. Suresh Babu made 67.

Jolly Rovers 376 for five decl. in 70 overs (M. Vijay 164, R. Ramkumar 87, Dinesh Karthik 78) vs Eagle 72 for nine in 22 overs (R. Ashwin four for 31).

India Pistons 193 for four in 90 overs (S.P. Lekshmikumar 58 batting, M. Suresh Babu 67, M.R. Srinivas 41 batting) vs IOB.

Parry’s 172 for five in 95 overs (N.S. Kumaraguru 67, Sree Kumar Nair four for 48) vs Vijay.

Alwarpet 315 for six in 90 overs (S. Vidyut 121, V. Maaruthi Raghav 82 batting, Ashwin Venkataraman 40) vs Grand Slam.

Young Stars 177 in 51.2 overs (S. Ramesh 62, A. Edward Kennedy four for 62) vs Globe Trotters 99 for eight in 36 overs.

Aruna 318 for nine in 90 overs (P. Sakthi 57, S. Anirudha 136) vs Indian Bank.

Reliance beats Airtel

Reliance defeated Airtel by 73 runs in the VS Sports Network Twenty20 telecom cricket tournament here.

The scores: Reliance 173 for five in 20 overs (Chandran 46, Balakrishnan 25, Swamynathan 40 n.o.) bt Airtel 100 for nine in 20 overs (Giridharan 25, Balakrishnan three for 26); Tata Indicom 112 for seven in 20 overs (Arun 31, P. Venkatesh three for 16, Preethi Vardhan three for 17) lost to Aircel 116 for three in 12.3 overs (P. Venkatesh 41 n.o., Venkatraman 31 n.o).

Chummar triumphs

A. Chummar Verghese (68 nett) emerged the winner in the gold division of the VGS Cup golf tournament, conducted at the Madras Gymkhana Club golf annexe. Abhya Doshi (69) was the runner-up.

In the silver division, B. Ravi (66) was the winner and Muthukumaran (70) the runner-up.
