GREEN INITIATIVE: Teachers from city schools learn about environmental education at a training programme in Chennai on Friday.

CHENNAI: Science and social science teachers from various city schools got a perspective of environment education at a training programme held at Stenographers’ Guild, T.Nagar, on Friday.

Organised by Rotary International District 3230 and the New Delhi-based Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), the ‘Green School’ programme had about 20 teachers from both government and private schools as participants.

Assistant Co-ordinator, Environment Education Unit of CSE, Ashish Shah said the programme envisaged involvement of students in the environment audit of their schools. It would have twin impact – making students understand the significance of environment conservation and improvement of environment condition in schools.

Students would be involved in collection of information and assessment activities about the use and management of resources such as water, air and land, and waste in the schools. They would rate the school according to the data collected about the environmental practices adopted by the schools, Mr. Shah said.

For instance, students would collect data about rain water harvesting practices and recycling of waste water done in the school. The teachers who would be trained about the programme would in turn supervise the students’ activity, he said.

About 3,000 schools across the country had adopted the ‘Green School’ programme, he added.

Besides presentation on environment, the training programme also included screening of short films on rainwater harvesting, water pollution and ozone layer. Participants in the programme said it would be an interesting activity for children and could be imbibed in environment education class.

Awareness about the programme needed to be created among the schools.

Rotary International’s Task Force Water Management chairman K.S. Jayaraman said more students would be networked for the programme in the city through Rotary Interact Clubs functioning in schools.
