LONDON: Rangers lost to Werder Bremen 1-0 but still advanced to the UEFA Cup football quarterfinals along with Sporting Lisbon on Thursday. Rangers advanced 2-1 on aggregate, helped by its 2-0 win at Ibrox last week. Lisbon beat visiting English Premier League club Bolton 1-0 to advance 2-1 on aggregate. Rangers was lucky not to lose by more at Bremen. The German club scored in the 58th minute through Diego, who flipped the ball to the side to escape two defenders, then drove a powerful shot past Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor inside the far post. The results: Last 16, second leg: Werder Bremen 1 (Ribas 58) bt Rangers 0, Rangers won 2-1 on aggregate. Sporting Lisbon 1 (Pereirinha 85) bt Bolton 0, Sporting won 2-1 on aggregate. — Agencies
