NEW DELHI: The top-seeded Chun-Mei Ji and Sheng-Nan Sun of China overcame stiff resistance from the second-seeded Aurelie Vedy of France and Sunitha Rao 2-6, 6-2, 10-4 in the doubles final of the $50,000 ITF women’s tennis tournament at the DLTA Complex here on Friday. It was an impressive recovery by the Chinese players, who had made the semifinals of the $600,000 WTA Tour event in Bangalore last week, to have bounced back from being 0-2 in the second set, after having lost the first. Playing only the doubles event in this tournament, the Chinese players had the energy to be at their best at the end of the match, even as the Indo-French combination wilted under pressure. There was a bad call in the super tie-break by the chair-umpire, as he was unable to see the winner from the Indo-French combination, and that further broke the resistance of the second seeds who fought bravely even as the match was slipping away. Owing to the glare of the sun on his eyes, the umpire erred to give a two-point lead for the Chinese while it should have been 2-2. The positioning of the television cameras had forced the chair to be placed on the wrong side of the court, leading to a few glaring calls from the umpire. To compound the problem, a string of errors from Aurelie and Sunitha put paid to their hopes in the match tie-break. It was the second time that Sunitha lost a thriller against the talented pair. The victory was worth 35 WTA points and $2,660 while the runner-up had to be content with 25 WTA points and sharing $1,425. The results: Singles (semifinals): Yanina Wickmayer (Bel) bt Naomi Cavaday (GBR) 6-1, 6-3; Ekaterina Dzehalevich (Blr) bt Margit Ruutel (Est) 6-4, 0-6, 7-5. Doubles (final): Chun-Mei Ji and Sheng-Nan Sun (Chn) bt Aurelie Vedy (Fra) and Sunitha Rao 2-6, 6-2, 10-4.
