North Usman Road flyover to be opened on March 30

CHENNAI: The North Usman Road flyover will be inaugurated by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on March 30, Mayor M. Subramanian said here on Friday.

The flyover will be the first in the list of four flyovers projects, announced sometime ago by the Corporation, to be commissioned. Local Administration Minister M. K. Stalin would be participating in the function.

The other three flyovers projects are on Turnbulls Road-Chamiers Road, G. N. Chetty Road-Thirumalai Road and Usman Road-Duraisamy Road junctions.

The North Usman Road flyover at the junction of the North Usman Road-Kodambakkam High Road is coming up at an estimated cost of Rs.9.72 crore. It would take traffic off the North Usman Road immediately after the post office near Habibullah Road on the southern side and near the signal off Lady Madhavan Road on the southern side. It is expected to ease traffic flow into the T. Nagar area and reduce the load on the intersection regulating movement into Kodambakkam.

Addressing presspersons after the Corporation budget discussion, Mr. Subramanian said that the flyover on Usman Road would be inaugurated by June or July and the one on G.N. Chetty Road by December.

The Corporation also announced that it would construct flyovers at Mint and the Lattice Bridge Road and subway at Ganesapuram. These apart, several small bridges have also been announced in the 2008-09 budget of the local body.

Ezhil Nagar, M.G.R. Nagar and Sathya Nagar would be linked with Nehru Nagar by a bridge over the Buckingham Canal at the cost of Rs.2 crore. Thiru. Vi. Ka. First Link Road, Vivekananda Nagar and Rajiv Gandhi Nagar would be linked across the Captain Cotton Canal with a walkway at the cost of Rs.25 lakh.

Krishnamoorthy Nagar and Ramakrishna Road would be linked with M.K.B. Nagar with a vehicular bridge at the cost of Rs. 2 crore.

Across the Otteri Nullah, Narasimha Nagar and S.M. Nagar would be linked at the cost of Rs.50 lakh and N Block and O Block at the same cost. Across the Virugambakkam Canal, a bridge would be constructed on Pari Street at the cost of Rs.1.25 crore and on Kannagi Street at Rs.30 lakh.

Across the Velachery Canal, a bridge at an estimated cost of Rs. 50 lakh would be built on Vijaya Nagar 100 Feet Road and another at the same cost linking the Velachery Bypass Road and Venkateswara Nagar.

A small bridge at the cost of Rs.20 lakh would be constructed linking the Velachery Mathiazhagan Street and Nehru Nagar across the Raj Bhavan Canal.
