CHENNAI: Swift action by the railway police resulted in the arrest of a known offender who tried to escape under the cover of darkness after stabbing a teenager in the Park Town subway on Thursday. According to police, three robbers waylaid 19-year-old youth Amanullah at knifepoint and took his money and mobile phone in the subway. The victim raised an alarm as the robbers ran after stabbing him. On their way, the robbers also snatched the mobile phone of a woman, Uma Maheswari, who was returning home from Tidel Park in Taramani. When the woman also raised alarm, another commuter, Ramesh, gave the robbers a hot chase and his shouts for help brought the beat constable to the subway. The constable managed to capture one of the culprits, Velu (29) of Cemetry Gardens, S.M.Nagar and recovered the knife and cash from him. Hours later, based on the confession of Velu, a special team arrested the other two accused Raja and Munusamy and recovered weapons from them. A senior police officer said that Velu had been arrested twice under Goondas Act in the past. The victim, Amanullah, was treated as an outpatient at the Government General Hospital.
