Sasikiran emerges champion

Udhagamandalam: GM Krishnan Sasikiran of ONGC collected eight points from nine rounds to emerge the individual champion of the 19th PSPB inter-unit chess tournament at the Hotel Monarch here on Wednesday.

There was a tie for the top spot with both Sasikiran and GM Abhijit Kunte (IOCL) finishing the day with eight points apiece. However, the former, with a better tie-break score, edged the latter for the title.

In the final round, the title-winner scored a comfortable win over GM Abhijeet Gupta of BPCL after enjoying a two-pawn up advantage in a queen and bishop ending. Kunte forced a similar win over Deepan Chakkravarthy of IOCL.

Important results (ninth and final round): K. Sasikiran (ONGC) 8 bt Abhijeet Gupta (BPCL) 6, Abhijit Kunte (IOCL) 8 bt Deepan Chakkravarthy (IOCL) 6, M.R. Venkatesh (BPCL) 6 lost to Koneru Humpy (ONGC) 7.5, Nisha Mohota (OIL) 6.5 lost to S.S. Ganguly (IOCL) 7, Neelotpal Das (ONGC) 6 bt Varugeese Koshy (ONGC) 5.5, Sandipan Chanda (ONGC) 5.5 drew with Laishram Imocha (OIL) 5.5, P. Konguvel (ONGC) 6 bt G.N. Gopal (BPCL) 5, Deep Sengupta (IOCL) 5.5 drew with S. Arun Prasad (BPCL) 5.5, S. Kidambi (BPCL) 5 lost to V. Saravanan (BPCL) 6, Lanka Ravi (ONGC) drew with Nigam Vikas (ONGC) 5.

Prabhu scalps six

M. Prabhu scalped six wickets as Galaxy ‘A’ defeated OFT SA by 32 runs in a Canara Bank-Tiruchi DCA third division league cricket match in Tiruchi.

The scores: First division: St. Joseph’s College 51 in 13.3 overs (R. Suresh four for 23, I. Murugan four for 25) lost to MAP CC 52 for six in 17 overs.

Second division: National College 222 in 45 overs (R. Karthik 46, S. Mohan Babu 57) bt JJ CET 207 in 45 overs (P. Logesh 68).

Customs & Central Excise 174 for seven in 39 overs (S. Jerald 47) bt Majestic CC 91 in 21 overs (R. Deepan four for 32).

The Tiruchi DFA super division football league fixture between St. Joseph’s College and Jamal Mohammed College ended in a goalless draw in Tiruchi on Wednesday.

Other league results: Second division: White Blues 1 (Vivek) drew with Bishop Heber College 1 (Nawang). Third division: Kallakudi 3 (Balan, Rozario, Akilan) bt UDC 0.

Easy for SNR Sons

SNR Sons defeated Government Arts by eight wickets in the Bharathiar University inter-collegiate inter-zone cricket tournament at the varsity grounds in Coimbatore on Wednesday.

The scores:

GAC 74 in 23.2 overs (Sundaramoorthy four for 12) lost to SNR Sons 74 for two in 14 overs (Vivek Subramani 43).
