DHARWAD: The house where Gangubai Hangal spent her childhood, which has been refurbished and converted into a music school, was formally handed over to the Hangal Music Foundation here on Wednesday.

On the occasion of the 96th birthday of the vocalist on Wednesday, Assistant Director of Kannada and Culture K.H. Chennur handed over the key of the house to founder president of the Hangal Music Foundation Manoj Hangal.

Receiving the key, Mr. Hangal announced that the house would become functional soon.

Programme

Musicians Pankaj Modi, Pushpa Rao, Basavaraj Hiremath, photographer Shashi Sali and others were present on the occasion. Pandit Naganath Wadeyar and Archana Hangal presented a music programme. The refurbished house was thrown open to the public during the Dharwad Zilla Utsav held in November.

As part of the utsav, the house was converted into an exhibition venue where 62 rare photographs covering various stages in the musician’s life were displayed.

The once dilapidated house was refurbished as a heritage building by the Dharwad Nirmiti Kendra with technical assistance from the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage.

Ancestral house

It might be recalled that Ms. Hangal had sold her ancestral home, located at Shukravarpet, in 1957 to Krishnaji Venkatacharya Kittur, who in turn sold it to Dasoi Kulkarni in 1963.

The district administration acquired Ms. Hangal’s house from the legal heirs in 2007 and renovated it under funds released from the State Government.
