‘Interpret Muslim laws properly’

NEW DELHI: The All-India Democratic Women’s Association has carried out a signature campaign among Muslim women to demand a change in the way in which some of the laws affecting them were being interpreted and implemented in India. The issues on which the signature campaign was conducted over the past few years are banning of the prevalent practice of triple talaq, ban on polygamy and granting mother the right to custody of children. Over 25,000 women from across the country have signed the campaign and these were handed over to chairperson of the National Commission for Minorities Mohammad Shafi Qureshi on Tuesday.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, AIDWA president Subhashini Ali said they had requested the Minorities Commission to discuss the matter with different sections of the community.
