More closed circuit cameras to capture traffic rule violators

Staff Reporter

The cameras will be installed at 80 locations across the city

During rush hour, it is becoming difficult for the police to stop vehicles for violations

In the last two months, Rs.5 lakh was collected as penalty from many violators

CHENNAI: Closed circuit cameras will be installed at as many as 80 locations in the city by the police to monitor traffic violations.

Besides monitoring, the cameras would also help the police penalise the violators, including those who breach the stop line at the traffic signals, jump lanes, use mobile phones while driving, a senior police officer said.

Eight places have it

According to him, such cameras were functioning at eight locations, including Anna Nagar, Spencer junction and Teynampet.

On the significance of the cameras, the officer said that during rush hour, it was becoming difficult for the police to stop vehicles for violations. On many occasions, the motorists also ignore orders by police to stop.

Keeping these aspects in mind, the police have proposed to install the cameras at more locations as it would not only discourage the offenders, but also help penalise them, the officer said.

Though the police now manually record the registration numbers of vehicles which were found violating traffic rules and issue notices after getting the addresses from the Regional Transport Authority, the process is quite cumbersome for the law enforcers, the senior police officer said.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sunil Kumar said that during the last two months, Rs.5 lakh was collected as penalty from many of those who were issued by the notices.

Legal action

The police would initiate legal action against those who have not paid the fine despite having received the notices, he said.
