Basu’s doubts over UPA government’s future
Special Correspondent
KOLKATA: Veteran Marxist leader Jyoti Basu on Tuesday expressed doubts over the future of the United Progressive Alliance government if it chose to go ahead with the civilian nuclear deal with the United States ignoring the implications of the Hyde Act on the agreement.
Asked by journalists whether the government could fall if it went ahead with the deal, Mr. Basu said: “If they [the government] do not accept our opposition to it and disregard the view of Parliament then that could happen.”
Earlier, at a function organised by the State’s Animal Resource Development department, Mr. Basu was apprehensive of how long the existing arrangement between the Left parties and the UPA government would last.
The Left parties were dependent on the UPA and the latter on the Left to keep forces such as the Bharatiya Janata Party out of power, he pointed out. “But I do not know how long this relationship will last.”
