Santos, Churchill top groups

KOLKATA: South Africa’s Santos FC played out a 1-1 draw with East Bengal to ensure top position in Group ‘A’ in the 113th IFA Shield football tournament here on Monday. Churchill Brothers ensured that it stayed on top of Group ‘B’, beating Mohammedan Sporting (Kolkata) 2-0 .

Playing at the Howrah Stadium near here, local favourite East Bengal needed to win by a margin of three goals to ensure a place in the semifinals.

Santos took the lead in the seventh minute through Gregory Michael Roelf. East Bengal equalised in the 14th minute off a penalty. Brazilian import Edmilson Marques scored after Santos custodian Eduan Andre Naude brought down the former inside the penalty area.

East Bengal ousted

The draw helped Santos tally four points from two matches, with Mahindra United second on three points. East Bengal, with just one point, crashed out. Two second-half goals by Ogba Kalu (60th minute) and Jaison Valses (82nd) saw Churchill putting it across Mohammedan Sporting. — Principal Correspondent
