A majority of projects relate to agriculture and food processing The two districts among top eight districts for implementing REGP MANGALORE: With a month to spare for the end of financial year, the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) has exceeded target for 2007-08 in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. At the beginning of the year, the commission had plans to sanction Rs. 87-lakh subsidy to 76 projects in Dakshina Kannada and aimed at creating 1,443 jobs. However, the commission created employment for 1,700 people and released subsidy worth Rs. 1.2 crore for 70 projects. Confirming this, the director of KVIC, K. Mohan Raju, said that the commission had greater success in Udupi district. In all, 58 projects were targeted in Udupi district for a subsidy of Rs. 67 lakh. The projects were expected to create jobs for 1,119 people. By February-end, as many as 99 projects had been sanctioned with subsidies worth Rs. 1.32 crore and jobs created for 1,250 people. The commission anticipates an addition of about 10 per cent to these figures by the end of this financial year. A majority of the projects sanctioned in two districts are related to agriculture and food processing. DistinctionDakshina Kannada and Udupi are among the top eight districts for successful implementation of the Rural Employment Generation Programme (REGP) of the commission. Mr. Raju said that 18,500 people had been offered jobs in 550 production units during the programme. “Although this initiative is on in the country since mid-1990s, it took off in these two districts since 2002,” Mr. Raju said and added that the people of this region were hardworking and enterprising. “More people should come forward and avail the benefits of this rural employment generation scheme,” Mr. Raju said. Under the scheme, the prospective entrepreneurs have to approach nationalised, regional rural or recognised private banks or cooperative banks for financial assistance to set up a village industry. Once the loan is approved, the commission will take it upon itself to clear 10 to 30 per cent of the borrowing, which is called “back-end subsidy”. Marketing supportIn order to provide marketing support to the institutions supported by it, the KVIC conducts district, State and national-level exhibitions throughout the year. Mr. Raju is here to organise a 10-day State-level exhibition from Monday.
