They are no less than others

Gala time: Specially-abled youngsters taking part in a running race at ‘Armaan’, organised exclusively for them on Friday. -

HYDERABAD: Several specially-abled children on Friday had a ball, showcasing their talent in dancing, singing, drawing and sports at the Special Olympic Bharat Andhra Pradesh event in the Secunderabad RRC grounds.

They even exhibited a wide range of commodities like jute handbags, candles, envelopes, books, etc all prepared by them in the ability mela of the event. Such was the products’ finish that they could even challenge the best in the business.

Hundreds of specially-abled children (mentally challenged) from over 40 schools of twin cities participated in the event that was conducted in two segments of ‘Carnival Armaan-Dreams Unlimited’ and ‘Sportsmeet Roshini-Awakening of Souls’.

While, some participated in the 100 and 200 metre running race, shot-put and throw ball competitions, others were working with colours to draw paintings. Soon as the music took over the environs, some even charged onto the stage to shake a leg, amidst huge applause from the rest. Camel and horse rides, added fun to their celebrations.

“Last time, I bagged first prize in the 100 metre running race and want to repeat it again now”, said a confident S.K. Rifaath Ali, a specially-abled youngster and an inmate of PAWMENCAP.

The idea was to provide a platform for the specially-abled to showcase their talent individually. Such programmes curb the discrimination of being mentally-challenged among them and the smiles on their faces describe it all, said Junior Chamber International president Anthony Noronha, who sponsored the event.
