Another HUNDRED: Bharat Chipli’s good vein of form continued on Wednesday.. CHENNAI: Bharat Chipli’s second century in as many games enabled Karnataka register a comprehensive win over Hyderabad in the second round of the South Zone Ranji one-day cricket league for the K.S. Subbiah Pillai Trophy at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium here. Chipli’s 99-ball 100 on Wednesday, a day after his unbeaten 109 against Andhra, helped Karnataka to 312 for eight in 50 overs. Hyderabad’s reply was restricted to 201 for six, giving Karnataka the bonus point. In other matches, league leader Tamil Nadu trounced Kerala at CPT-IP and Goa clinched a high-scoring thriller against Andhra at ICL-Guru Nanak. Kerala was skittled out for 91 — P. Amarnath’s first spell of six overs for three wickets proving instrumental. Off-spinner R. Ashwin took three for 27. M. Vijay then made an unbeaten 41 as Tamil Nadu chased the target in 23.4 overs for the bonus point. Half-centuries from Rupesh Sarvankar (57), Ajay Ratra (63), and Shadab Jakati (74) helped Goa surpass Andhra’s 291 (for eight) with four balls to spare. Earlier, V. Manoj Sai (88) and Y. Gnaneswara Rao (59) had seemingly put Andhra in an impregnable position. But, Goa, despite losing lost four wickets in the final 9.2 overs, scored 96 in that period to pip Andhra. Karnataka, in comparison, had few difficulties defending its total. Vinay Kumar scalped the first three Hyderabad batsmen, two of them to ill-advised pull strokes, before left-arm spinners Sunil Joshi and B. Appanna struck. Hyderabad was reduced to 82 for five in the 25th over. Abhinav Kumar (50 n.o.) and Amol Shinde (47) added 84 in 20.2 overs for the sixth wicket, but Hyderabad might conceivably have done more to defend the bonus point. Chipli had earlier reached his century with a late cut for three. He struck eleven fours in his knock and added a vital 143 with Vinay Kumar (75, 74b, 7x4, 1x6) for the third wicket. Chipli failed to place a lofted inside-out drive as desired and Vinay followed him to the pavilion three runs later. But, Amit Verma’s delightfully improvised 30-ball 45 down the order ensured Karnataka capitalised on the Chipli-Vinay alliance. The scores: Karnataka 312 for eight in 50 overs (B. Chipli 100, Vinay Kumar 75, Amit Verma 45) bt Hyderabad 201 for six in 50 overs (Abhinav Kumar 50 n.o., Amol Shinde 47). Points: Karnataka 5, Hyderabad -1. Andhra 291 for eight in 50 overs (V. Manoj Sai 88, Y. Gnaneswara Rao 59) lost to Goa 293 for eight in 49.2 overs (Sagun Kamat 43, Rupesh Sarvankar 57, Ajay Ratra 63, Shadab Jakati 74). Goa 4, Andhra 0. Kerala 91 in 33.2 overs (P. Amarnath four for 16) lost to Tamil Nadu 92 for three in 23.4 overs (M. Vijay 41 n.o.). TN 5, Kerala -1.
